Ocean Minded Singapore had their first Beach Clean Up at East Coast Park on 25th April 2009. With Ocean Minded's mission which is to protect our beaches, respect the beaches and have an overall love of life, we really put into practice what we preach on that day. 35 participants showed up for this beach clean up from 9am to 11am and they cleaned the entire beach that stretched along the beach in front of the "Big Splash".
Although Singapore may seem like a clean country however sometimes what we fail to realise is that there are a lot of rubbish that flows in from the sea right up onto our beautiful beaches. Most of the trash that we picked up were styrofoam, bits of plastic and aluminum cans from soft drinks. However, the most interesting piece of trash that we picked up was a bag full of eye lash glue.
The clean up lasted for about an hour and a half and after that we all sat around the picnic area to have some drinks, apples and a sandwich while Eu Chern (local part-time artiste) serenaded us with his renditions from Jack Johnson and Jason Miraz. As there was a a family that joined us there too, they brought their own picnic table and their son was loving the sunshine and a chance to play ball with his father.
Everyone who went had a good time and we went back satisfied knowing that we all did our part to clean up our beaches and to continue living that what we did will helped the environment and helped preserve our beaches for the enjoyment of everyone who goes to the beach at East Coast Park.
