The Viliv S5 has the widest codec support in the market.
Why not, its a PC at the heart so any codec that can be installed into a PC it should be able to be supported.
My current A3 can play most videos, however, if the video is not hardsubbed, I will need to extract the subs out and re-edit them again. Currently I have not much of a choice if I want to watch it when I travel.
Sometime the subs are not really sync with the video so speech and subs may be out.
With the S5 there is no need to re-encode your ogm, mkv or mp4 files. Soft subs in these containers can be processed by the respective software.
The must-have software should be the CCCP Codec, this package is a complete package to play most anime available on the web. If necessary you can also install a flv player to play those flash videos.
With Windows 7 rumored to be launch before the year end, it may make sense to wait a while before getting this baby, price wise it may drop if the other netbook players follow the route of Viliv. However, if you can't wait - Don't because this baby is definitely worth it. You can always upgrade later.
So far I feel the better brands are : COWON, ARCHOS. Each having it's strengths and weakness.
The one weakness I feel is the codec and sub support.
I wish COWON upgrades it firmware to allow the processing of subs within these containers or else this baby will on my Christmas list this year.
Anyone willing to sponsor me a set ...

Viliv S5 Premium 3G [Viliv-S5/32ssd/3G]Expected to cost $1299, this machine is equipped with a 32SSD (a bit little for me),a 3G connection (for those with BBOM).
The price is comparable to that offered by Dynamism, which does not come with local warranty.
